Simply Shakespeare was Simply Wonderful

Today, I picked up the Pegasus, the magazine of the University of Central Florida, and was touched by an article of the Simply Shakespeare Theater. Wonderful memories...

  1. Reviews for Ol Man on Amazon and Barnes and Noble are gratifying.8 of 9 , five stars. From people I know, but best of all, from people I don't. y beloved mentor at Northwestern gave me writing advice I've always remembered: write not for friends, but strangers.

  2. Amazing. Orlando Sentinel is doing a spread on Orlando Shakespeare Festival 's 25th anniversary. Most start up theaters fold after a couple of years. Ours struggled, thrived, and now flourishes, a testimony to the continuity of leadership, the quality of the work, and the artistic leadership.

I laugh now recalling the first ten years and those crazy adventures: opening night on the coldest night in Orlando's history for that date; the loyal, shivering audience who were determined to have professional, understandable, fun, Shakespeare in our community; multiple generations of Hispanic families in the audience with the grandkids translating for their grandparents( forerunners of captioning?) as the shows went on.

I recall volunteers and myself carrying mattresses and borrowed furniture up three flights of stairs to apartments we secured for our first companies. Work! And actors, including the current artistic director, Jim Helsinger, suggesting I should present myself with more dignity. At the time, I think no one but a few volunteers understood what it was taking to get off the ground. if it took schlepping, vthat's what it took. That included literally carrying around our first business manager, who was paralyzed and confined to a wheel chair.

What an unlikely , all consuming dream we had. 25 years later,...
